Libby’s debut self-titled record is a culmination of a decade of collaboration across five states with songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist Django Haskins. Her first song (and first single), “Lay it Down” came to her during a guided meditation where she met her deceased Grandma inside the depths of a redwood tree. Her grandma had carved secrets she’d been holding on to her entire life and finally released them to her granddaughter, and a song was born.
Drawing on influences from Brandi Carlile, Joni Mitchell and Patty Griffin, the six songs tell stories through time: stories of growing up, evolving, facing grief and loss. Some are personal: an offering of gratitude for the body’s wisdom after a devastating miscarriage (“Body Knows,” the album’s second single). Others tell keenly-observed scenes from strangers’ lives: a man’s first day out of prison where he’s headed home to see his family for the first time in 10 years (“Greyhound Rider”); a coffin being loaded on a plane, as seen from a window seat (“DFW”).
So find yourself a redwood tree, sit back, and let these songs wash over you.
